Take a Walk on the Wild Side Schools' Planters Design Competition
RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2020
Deadline Extended - Applications close Thursday 30 January
Who can enter?
Primary and secondary schools, conservation and wildlife clubs in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Yorkshire and the West Midlands are invited to come up with their best looking upcycled planter for the Take a Walk on the Wild Side Planters schools' competition at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, which will be on display from Thursday 11 June - Sunday 14 June 2020.
Entrants must be registered with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. If you are not already a member you can register for free here.
There is no charge for entering and only one entry per school or club is permitted.
Your Planter must be upcycled and follow the theme 'Take a Walk on the Wild Side'.
Every Take a Walk on the Wild Side Planter must include 70% plant material. You should aim to include a mix of seasonal plants that have been grown from seeds by the children and bought in to add a splash of colour. Artificial plant material should not be used. Take a look at our planting help sheet for more ideas.
You may use tasteful props to accessorise your planter, for example, windmills, figurines, insects, etc.
Your Planter should be freestanding and secure. You must use recycled and upcycled materials but it is important that the planters are substantial and able to withstand all weather conditions.
Your Planter must have a minimum area of 0.6m2 (0.75m x 0.8m) for primary schools and 0.8m2 (approximately 0.8m x 1m) for secondary schools. There is no maximum size, however you are advised to think carefully about transportation and carrying, as there will be no staff on hand at Chatsworth to help with this. The Planter can be one piece or several pieces that fit neatly together to meet this total size. There should be no loose or easily detachable parts.
Please read the full Take a Walk on the Wild Side Planters factsheet for more information on entry criteria, key dates and staging your entry.
All schools will receive a certificate of participation. Visitors to the Show will be invited to vote for their favourite entry in a People's Choice Award. The prizes will be as follows:
1st prize - £200 Garden Centre Vouchers and a certificate
2nd prize - £125 Garden Centre Vouchers and a certificate
3rd prize - £50 Garden Centre Vouchers and a certificate
