About the competition

This year, we’re having a change and we’ll be asking our Budding Gardeners to design and create spectacular scarecrows to display at RHS Garden Wisley during the summer half term, from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 5 June 2019. The competition is not just open to schools this year - we'd welcome entries from all our members in the local area!

Show us what you have discovered

Our theme for 2019  will be Spectacular Plant Discoveries. We would like you to create and showcase a scarecrow that represents a significant or important plant discovery that you have made, studied or found inspirational.

Perhaps you have learnt something incredible about plants you have been growing in your school or community garden?
You may prefer to design your scarecrow to represent a discovery made by a famous plant hunter, botanist or explorer. Or maybe you have been inspired by a famous scientist who identified valuable plants that we now use for food or medicine?

Your inspiration might be taken from the past or the present day. You can adorn your scarecrow with related props and items that will demonstrate to visitors the significance of plant and horticultural discoveries.

Enter the competition

The deadline for entries has been extended to Monday 25 March 2019.

Groups signed up to the Campaign for School Gardening are eligible to apply. If you are not registered yet, it is easy and free to register here.

Entries are welcome from all groups that can send a representative to RHS Garden Wisley on the set-up and set-down days as detailed in our competition factsheet.

All chosen entrants will receive a certificate of participation and a small prize for making and displaying their scarecrow. There will be a first, second and third prize awarded and winners will be selected by our panel of judges.

If you need some inspiration, why not take a look at last year’s scarecrow competition entries here?

Spectacular Plants

The theme of the Scarecrows competition links in with our Spectacular Plants project, which we're running with the help of plant hunter and explorer Stewart Macpherson. To celebrate the release of Stewart's latest book, 'Spectacular Plants - and how to grow them, we'll be discovering the world's most weird and wonderful plants and sharing them with you!
