RHS School Gardening Champion of the Year 2016

Margaret Fillery
Senior Laboratory Technician from Bethany School, Cranbrook, Kent

About Margaret

Maggy is thoroughly dedicated and committed to raising the profile of horticulture at school and took it upon herself to reinvigorate the school’s memorial garden. Entirely in her own time, Maggy stripped the garden right back and, with some help from the students, has created a space that staff, students and visitors can enjoy for years to come. Maggy has also established a weekly after-school Gardening Activity club to enthuse students.

Judges' comments

“Maggy is fantastic. I love how she encourages cross-curricular working in the garden and is teaching science to the students in such an engaging way. She clearly works tirelessly to turn the garden into a fantastic teaching resource and a beautiful place to be.”
“It’s not easy to engage secondary aged students in gardening but she clearly has a way of encouraging them to get stuck in – she even managed to get a year 11 to shovel manure all day without complaint! She is a very dedicated individual and is managing to take the inside of the school outside.”
“Maggy is an inspiration. She is uses gardening to teach the curriculum, runs an after school club, takes part in a number of RHS competitions and initiatives, and has transformed the memorial garden within the school so that it is a place that everyone can enjoy. A wonderful finalist.”
